In the Diocese of Sheffield’s Academies Trust, ultimate accountability and governance lies with our trust board. However, our Local Governing Body are valued partners in the trust’s mission and are our local feet on the ground.

 

Hello and welcome to Canon Popham Church of England Primary Academy.

The Local Governing Board’s aim, in close partnership with the Head Teacher, staff, parents and children, is to achieve an environment where we can work together as a Christian community to nurture our children within a happy, stimulating and caring school.  I am proud of the achievements of the School and to lead the Governing Body in the work to benefit all associated with the School.

Our Local Governing Body is made up of 8 members, who represent the Church of The Good Shepherd, Diocese of Sheffield, elected parents and members of the school staff.  Collectively, we have a group of individuals with a wide range of skills and experiences.

The Local Governor’s role is to monitor the overall strategic progress of the School. This is achieved by working alongside the Headteacher and senior leaders acting as critical friends and supporting staff, to provide excellent education to all the children.  

As a Local Governing Body we have responsibility to ensure that the school delivers a first-class education for all our children, regardless of their background. We do this in a variety of ways:

We meet as a full board to monitor the overall strategy of the school, considering national education guidelines and agreeing a range of targets ensuring the progress of all children.

We do not operate in sub-committees.  As a small Local Governing Body, it was felt that we would function better as a full team, enabling everyone to contribute and be up to date.  Decisions on resources, building, ICT, curriculum, safeguarding, performance management and school improvement are resolved.

As Local Governors we meet with our children regularly through attendance at acts of worship, Governor Award assemblies, Pupil Voice and lesson visits as well as being in and around school. 

Parents play a significant role in the work of the school, and the home school partnership is integral to delivering the best education, so governors take every opportunity to interact with parents and strengthen the relationship between home and school life.

In July 2018 the Local Governing Body made the decision to join Diocese of Sheffield Academies Trust (DSAT).  Established in 2013 as an independent charitable trust set up by Sheffield Diocesan Board of Education, its focus is on improving the life chances of pupils and their communities in the South Yorkshire region.  As one of 15 schools within the Multi Academy Trust, this has proved invaluable to the School in terms of collaboration, support and guidance for our Local Governing Body and Headteacher.  This is achieved through regular meetings with DSAT’s CEO, Andrew Waldron, and his support team.
