The Canon Popham Times Table Challenge

We are continuing with the school 'Times Tables Challenge' award system to

encourage the children to learn their times tables. The children need to learn their tables

(multiplication and division facts and missing digit questions) to achieve awards.

Try it!!! Can you do it? You can practise as many times as you like by following the links

This half term we will be consolidating learnt phonemes, especially split digraphs a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e,

during our speed sound sessions.

We will focus on writing information leaflets about the circus and different circus performers past and present.

We will continue to develop our sentence and story writing, and look at stories with a circus theme

such as Olivia saves the circus by Ian Falconer

and Paddington Bear at the circus by Michael Bond.

We will be studying poetry,

and the children will compose circus themed poems using repetition and alliteration.

Take a look at the BBC bitesize Literacy for KS1 website for some fun things to do.

Hand Writing

This half term we will be continuing to use different addition, subtraction, multiplication and division methods and use these when solving word problems and investigations.

As well as this, we will be consolidating our knowledge of time and learning about movement, position and direction.

If you have any questions about these areas of maths please come and speak to me.

Make maths fun by having a go at some Maths games by clicking here.

Year 1 and Year 2 children will be working closely together and our topic this term is

'The Big Top'

This topic has been chosen to provide the children with

opportunities to develop a wide range of geography, history, art and science skills

which will include finding out about the life of famous circus performers in the past such as Jules Leotard and Charles Blondin, as well as learning about

how circuses have changed through time.

Children will investigate different structures and create their own circus tent deciding which materials are suitable.

Mr Dan will be holding a circus workshop in school

so that children will be able to learn lots of circus skills and perform them to parents at our Pride in our learning afternoon.

Topic Homework

We are continuing with our topic approach to homework this year and in addition to

their reading book, weekly spellings and maths homework,

children can also choose to complete homework projects based upon our topic and a sheet is

included in this pack detailing the projects for this half term.

Each of the projects have been designed to allow children to develop their creative and critical thinking skills.

Remember that you can work with your child on homework and it's a fun activity to do with your child.

Your child will receive their homework sheet on the first week back this half term.

We hope you enjoy completing some of these homework projects with your children.

Other information

We are now in the summer term where the weather is likely to be quite hot at times.

Please provide your child with a labelled water bottle to take outside during playtimes, especially during warm weather, and make sure

that sun cream has been applied before school.

We also advise that you ensure your all child's school clothing is clearly labelled too as well as making

sure that your child does not bring toys from home into school. This would be greatly appreciated.

As always thank you for your continued support, it really makes a difference to your child's learning

and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to speak to us at any time.
